The Web was invented by Tim Berners Lee in 1989 while he was working at CERN. Tim wanted to solve the problem that different computers used different software which weren't able to be used by one another, making sharing information difficult. Tim created a software which could be understood by all. His specifications of URIs, HTTP and HTML were refined as Web technology grew.
The Web is simply just a large part of the Internet.
The Well, created using the Internet was set up in San Francisco by a group that has helped define the whole entire Web. The Well was being used as an escape for people where the could join different conferences/blogs to chat to people eg: Cat conference like mentioned in the video. Without the 'Well' social media sites like Facebook, Myspace, Bebo etc may not have existed. The Well was founded on libertarian principles. They believed that by sharing information they could 'free' people from what they saw as the control of people through the control of education. Instead of the government controlling what people knew, the people would control it. "Putting technology in the hands of the people."
The Web allows millions to work for nothing and is continuing to grow in its uses.. It is where we can fall in love, buy and sell online, express opinions, communicate, learn... Its hard to imagine where the Web could go from here.
The Internet and the Web are not the same thing. The Internet is a network of networks that allows any computer to communicate with any other computer as long as they are both connected to the internet.
